Most Anticipated Books of 2018!

Fun fact: when I was typing this in my phone, it tried to write “anticipated” as “anti-capitalist.” So, uh…that’s something.

Hey everyone! Okay, I know we’re already a month into 2018, but we’ve still got eleven more to go for some amazing new books to come out. And there are so many this year that I’m excited for! So here we go: the nine books that I’m most looking forward to reading in 2018…

Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman
release date: Feb. 27

I finally finished the Seraphina duology this January, so I feel like I’m ready to dive back into this world! As I understand it, this book will take place in the same kingdom as Seraphina and Shadow Scale, but will follow new characters – namely, a girl named Tess who disguises herself as a boy to go on adventures. Rachel Hartman’s books are full of dragons and magic and amazing female characters, so I’m really looking forward to this one!

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
release date: Mar. 6

Children+Of+Blood+And+Bone.jpegThis book hasn’t even come out yet and I feel like I’ve been seeing it everywhere. It sounds like it’ll be full of magic and darkness and royalty and fantasy, which could not be more perfectly suited for me. And apparently it’s already in movie production?? I’m crazy excited to get into this book. Also, would you look at this freaking beautiful cover?

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli
release date: Apr. 24

Basically, I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Becky Albertalli, and I know I’ll love this too. It follows Leah, one of the side characters in Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, as her group of friends enters their senior year of high school and deals with whatever’s to come. I can’t wait to see the all characters from Simon again! This book will come out about a month after the Love, Simon movie, so this spring will be great for Becky Albertalli fans. And I absolutely love this cover too!!

Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne
release date: May 1

Hello, sci-fi Jane Eyre retelling! You guys, this book looks amazing. You know what I love? Jane Eyre. Also retellings. You know what I’ve been reading a lot of lately? Sci-fi. (Probably because I’m taking a SF class at the moment…) This is basically gonna be a retelling of a Gothic novel in space!!! And the spaceship is called the Rochester!! Could you want anything more????

Nothing Happened by Molly Booth
release date: May 15

Have I mentioned that I love retellings? Because I do. And this is a retelling of my favorite Shakespeare play, Much Ado About Nothing. Ahhhh!!! It’s set in a modern day summer camp, with Beatrice and Benedick becoming Bee and Ben. This sounds so cute and funny and the perfect summer contemporary for me to pick up when it comes out.

City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab
release date: Aug. 28

This book takes place in Edinburgh! Which is my favorite city in the world!!! I’m gonna cry of happiness. It’s a middle grade paranormal fantasy following a girl whose parents are ghost hunters, which sounds like everything I’ve ever wanted. I just wish I could read this in Edinburgh, like I read V.E. Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic in London last year.

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee
release date: Oct. 2

No cover for this one yet, alas. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue was easily one of my favorite books that I read last year, so I (understandably) almost died when I heard that Mackenzi Lee was writing a sequel following Monty’s sister, Felicity! I loved her in TGGVV. Right now, the Goodreads page only says that it features “travel, pirates, and a science girl gang,” which…… I can’t even express how happy that makes me. Is it October yet???

What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera
release date: Oct. 9

Okay, I honestly know next to nothing about this, but it’s co-written by two authors whom I love, so I’m on board. I’m a little nervous though…Becky Albertalli writes really happy books, and Adam Silvera writes sad books, so which is it gonna be??? Do I need to start stocking up on tissues now?? Am I going to survive this???? (Also, how amazing is it that I get to read two new Becky Albertalli books this year!)

Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
release date: Nov. 6

Brandon Sanderson (aka my fantasy writing inspiration) described this book as “How to Train Your Dragon but instead it’s a girl who finds a spaceship and goes to Top Gun school. It’s like a mashup between Top Gun and Ender’s Game and How to Train Your Dragon with an old broken-down spaceship with a really weird personality.” This. Sounds. Amazing. (But also, hey Brandon, can you chill for a sec with the publishing books? I’m so behind.) (I still love you.)

So that’s all! I managed to (somewhat) curb my use of exclamation points and not use the word “excited” a million times. But….I am really excited. I hope all of these books live up to my expectations! And who knows what other new books I’ll find that I haven’t even heard about yet!

What new releases are you looking forward to this year? Are you planning on reading anything on this list?

  1. hahahaha if you had ended up with “anti-capitalist” at the beginning of the post you’d have got very different readers for this I’m sure 😉 Really awesome list! I’m definitely looking forward to Children of Blood and Bone and City of Ghosts!! 😀
