Sorting (some of) my favorite book characters into Hogwarts houses

Nothing sparks an argument quite like Hogwarts house sorting, right?

Because everyone loves a little good controversy, I’m going to be sorting some of my favorite characters from books into Hogwarts houses! In case you need a refresher of the qualities valued by each house:

Gryffindor: daring, chivalry, courage, recklessness
Hufflepuff: hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty
Ravenclaw: intelligence, wit, knowledge, curiosity
Slytherin: ambition, cunning, resourcefulness

So without further ado, here are my thoughts on some favorite characters!

Warning: this post will contain mild spoilers for the books discussed.

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

Blue Sargent

Blue embodies Gryffindor’s adventurous spirit, since she always wants to be a part of whatever quest is going on. Also, she can be somewhat confrontational and hotheaded, which are spot-on Gryffindor traits.

Gansey

“Boys like him didn’t die; they got bronzed and installed outside of public libraries.” -Maggie Stiefvater, The Dream Thieves Reworked and finished this doodle from over a year ago :) Image result for ravenclaw crest

[art source]

Anyone who goes on a quest to discover something supposedly impossible primarily for the joy of finding and learning about something no one else knows, and is literally incapable of shutting up about it, is pure Ravenclaw. Gansey’s love of knowledge firmly puts him in this house. And he is the Raven King, after all.

Ronan Lynch

viviena: “ g r e y w a r e n I was getting a bit unnerved with all the attention to this quickie because it’s so lame so I made some corrections. Sorry if you liked the previous one better ” Related image

[art source]

Why am I putting the violent and damaged “bad boy” in the house known for patience and kindness, you ask? Because underneath his tough exterior, Ronan is such a softy. He’s loyal to his core, going along with Gansey’s quest basically just because he cares so much for Gansey, and that screams Hufflepuff to me.

Adam Parrish

[art source]

You don’t get into a prestigious school like Aglionby on scholarship without being extremely ambitious and resourceful. Adam works so hard because he wants to get far in life, and he always feels like he has to do it alone, which feels Slytherin to me. But if anyone hurts someone he cares about, he will not hesitate to fight back.

Noah Czerny

Noah as we know him (as a ghost) is loyal to his friends to the end, even when it costs him everything. I feel like Noah when he was living might be sorted into a different house, but ghost Noah is pure Hufflepuff.

Henry Cheng

[art source]

Henry’s willingness to dive into any weird situation with his friends, even if he has no idea what’s going on, is Gryffindor through and through. That’s probably part of the reason that he and Blue bonded so quickly, as the Gryffindor latecomers to the group!

Kaz Brekker

Kaz Brekker (Six of Crows) by BoffieXD Kaz Brekker, Aka The Bastard of the Barrel (lead character from the novel Six of Crows) “I’m a business man,“ he’d told her.  Image result for slytherin crest

[art source]

Is there anywhere Kaz Brekker could go but Slytherin?? Kaz is basically the ultimate stereotypical Slytherin: cunning, ambitious, and self-preserving. But when he actually allows himself to care about someone, he will do literally anything to protect them.

Inej Ghafa

This one was a bit tough for me, because I also think she could belong in Slytherin with Kaz. But ultimately, her daring and fearlessness put her in Gryffindor. I think only a Gryffindor would venture out onto a wire without hesitation like she does.

Nina Zenik

 Image result for gryffindor crest

[art source]

I really love the idea of Nina and Inej in Gryffindor together but ALSO Nina is just such a Gryffindor. Headstrong and brave, sometimes acting before thinking, snarky, and ready to jump into a conflict. Plus, she looks good in red.

Matthias Helvar

Matthias Helvar, my big Fjerdan boy, for day 19. Related image

Matthias would never admit it out loud, but underneath his veneer of tough warrior-man, he’s a warm and loyal Hufflepuff. Once he’s decided he cares about someone, he won’t ever let them down, even if it’s not necessarily in his best interest.

Jesper Fahey

[art source]

Jesper is so loyal – he basically imprints on someone and will follow them to the end of the earth, making snarky comments and probably shooting some people along the way. He truly cares about the people close to him and will do anything to protect them.

Wylan Van Eck

Of course the first thing I draw for the Six of Crows is a vaguely older, oddly handsome Wylan Van Eck Image result for ravenclaw crest

[art source]

No matter what his father would tell you, Wylan is so smart. Perhaps not in the traditional, book-learning sort of way, but his cleverness and curiosity serve him well and certainly place him in the house of the smarty-pants.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

Image result for gentleman's guide to vice and virtue cover

Sidenote: I went to an author meet-up yesterday with Mackenzi Lee (!!!) and asked her where she would sort these characters, and she confirmed my answers! I wrote this before I asked her, though.

Henry “Monty” Montague

ah yes monty montague my favorite victorian fuckboy Image result for slytherin crest

[art source]

Even though Monty means well, he can often come across as self-centered and oblivious to the world around him. He wants what’s best for the people he loves, but sometimes prioritizes what he wants for them over what they want. In the end, though, he will do his best to help them, and he manages to talk himself out of many tight situations.

(Note: Mackenzi Lee said that Monty learns becomes more Gryffindor by the end of Gentleman’s Guide, which I definitely agree with – though I still sort him in Slytherin!)

Percy Newton

Related image

[art source]

This boy is loyal through and through. Even when he’s hurting, he hides it because he wants to protect the people he cares about. And let’s be real, only a truly patient Hufflepuff could put up with Monty when he was at his most insufferable. Percy is an angel and we don’t deserve him.

Felicity Montague

 Image result for ravenclaw crest

[art source]

Is there any other house to put this clever, curious, book-smart girl? Felicity is constantly in search of knowledge, wanting to learn more about the things that interest her. She’s even willing to put herself in precarious situations to learn more, which screams Ravenclaw to me.

Graceling Realm by Kristin Cashore

Katsa

 Image result for gryffindor crest

[art source]

Katsa is basically the prototypical Gryffindor: brave and reckless to the point of endangering herself sometimes, and absolutely zero chill. She would rather dive into a difficult situation and fight her way out than sit down and think up a solution. I can’t think of any other place to put her than Gryffindor.

Fire

so I was drawing Fire and realized it’s @meabhd‘s birthday, so this is dedicated to you girl :) You’ve been such an inspiration to me and I’m so glad you share you art and talents with all of us! I hope your birthday is fantastic! Related image

[art source]

Fire is another one of those Hufflepuffs where you probably don’t see it when you first meet her, but when you get to know her soft side, her caring for others and her longing to fit in, there’s really nowhere else she could go. For me, Fire’s heart and her empathy are her strongest characteristics, which scream Hufflepuff.

Bitterblue

 Image result for ravenclaw crest

[art source]

Curious and clever, really into research and decoding ciphers, and constantly wanting to learn more about the world around her, Bitterblue is pure Ravenclaw. She looks at things with an intellectual curiosity and loves gaining new knowledge. Plus, she has “blue” in her name so she fits right in with Ravenclaw’s colors!

Jane Austen books

Elizabeth Bennet

Image result for elizabeth bennet gif Image result for gryffindor crest

I think this does vary by adaptation (LBD Lizzie is such a Ravenclaw), but in terms of the book, I see Elizabeth as a Gryffindor. Though she is known for her wit, she tends to speak before she thinks, which lands her in some trouble at times. Plus, “my courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me” is SUCH a Gryffindor thing to say.

Mr. Darcy

Image result for mr darcy gif Related image

Fitzwilliam Darcy is a Hufflepuff and you can fight me on this. This dude may come across as proud and aloof, but he’s known for being kind and caring to his sister and fair to his servants, which is Hufflepuff through and through. Overall, his ability to listen to the people around him and grow from them defines him more than his pride.

Emma Woodhouse

Image result for emma woodhouse gif Image result for slytherin crest

Emma loves meddling in other people’s lives, even when she should probably stay out of it. Though she pretends she’s doing it for the other person’s benefit, it tends to be self-serving in some way. And of course, she’s extremely cunning about matchmaking (even if she can be a bit blind about it) which is a very Slytherin trait.

Mr. Knightley

Image result for mr knightley gif Image result for ravenclaw crest

The only thing Knightley loves more than books is engaging in a lively debate (most likely with Emma). He fits pretty neatly into the moralistic, rule-following stereotype of Ravenclaws, but he’s also got a witty and clever side that makes Ravenclaw even more of a fit for him.

Wow, this post ended up being really long! I’m hoping someday I can do something like this again and sort more characters, since I only got to a few books!

What do you think of my sorting? Where would you sort your favorite characters?

  1. Hello Margaret!!!
I love this post so much haha. Kaz is SUCH a Slytherin!!! I agree with your final choice of Gryffindor for Inej because she is so brave and strong-willed and I think she isn’t as scheming or conniving as Kaz lol 🙂 I wasn’t sure where I was going to put Matthias but I agree with your choice of Hufflepuff- he is a big softy!
I haven’t read the Raven Cycle yet but it sounds like such an interesting series so I think I will give it a try one of these days 🙂

  2. Your choices make so much sense- even Ronan in Hufflepuff (though I might veer to putting him in Slytherin just based on the persona he shows the world). And Gansey is definitely in Ravenclaw and Kaz is one hundred percent in Slytherin! And Inej and Nina are Gryffindors for sure!
