My family chooses my February TBR!

For the month of February, I’ve decided to do something a little different and let my family members choose what books I read. I’m in a family of six, which means I got five books to pick up for the next month!

I asked them to choose from specific categories from the 2019 reading goals, but even though I made it so easy for them and provided very specific lists, some of them insisted on recommending I pick up different books entirely. 🙄 Still, I stuck with my own lists and made them choose.

My older brother’s pick

My brother is 24 and lives across the country in New York, so he was the only one I couldn’t ask in person. My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

Not sure exactly what my brother is saying about me through this… (Although he did say he chose it because he saw a review in the NYT, which he called the Times because he’s a fancy New Yorker.)

It sounds highly entertaining and far outside what I’d normally read, but I’ve heard very good things and can’t wait to pick it up!

The Naming by Alison Croggon

This is a fantasy book, the first in a four-book series, following a young woman named Maerad who discovers that she has magical powers. Pretty basic, as far as I can tell, but I am a sucker for that trope.

I bought this book about a year ago with every intention of reading it immediately, but, you know, the best laid plans… In any case, I’m eager to finally pick it up now! Who knows why my sister chose it out of all the rest, but it is a nice pretty purple color.

The Darkest Legacy by Alexandra Bracken

Which is the fourth and (as far as I know) final book in the Darkest Minds series! He chose this one because he said all the other ones on my list looked, and I quote, “lame.” I don’t think he knows anything about this series.

I’m not actually sure what this particular book is about, but I believe it follows Zu from the Darkest Minds series, several years after the third book leaves off. Other than that, I’m going in pretty blind!

My dad’s pick

My dad also tried to suggest a bunch of books that he’s been pushing me to read for forever (some of which I’ve tried to read and didn’t like, Dad – I know you’re reading this). I told him that I didn’t just want a random book recommendation, but I wanted him to choose a book from my “bottoms of Goodreads categories” challenge, so he chose the only one from the list that he’s read…

A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin

Coincidentally, Ursula K. Le Guin also taught at my college for a short period of time, though long before I went there, and this will be the first book of hers that I read. This is a book that has been suggested to me over and over again but it’s never felt like the right time to read it – I guess that time is now!

Dangerous by Shannon Hale

Since she knows that Shannon Hale is one of my favorite authors, it makes sense! (Also, it was a familiar name in a sea of others. How I accrued so many ebooks that I have yet to read is a mystery.)

All I know about this book is that it’s a sci-fi involving superpowers and that the Goodreads synopsis is very vague. But I’m excited to dive in!

So here are the books that I’m going to be reading in February, based on my family’s picks! Looks like I’ll be reading quite a bit of sci-fi/fantasy.
