Hello and welcome to the Women’s History Month Reading Challenge!
What is this reading challenge, you ask?
The Women’s History Month Reading Challenge is a reading challenge hosted by me, Margaret, for the entire month of March, aka Women’s History Month. There are two sections of the challenge: the reading section and the blogging section. You can take part in both, or only one, or none at all if you’re only reading this post to find out what’s going on!
The goal for the reading section is to read only books written by women from March 1-31, 2019.
Below is a bingo board with sixteen challenges to push you to read a wide array of books. Whether or not you aim for a bingo or a blackout or anything else is entirely up to you. (If you get a blackout, though, you will earn my eternal respect.)
The challenges:
All books must be written by a woman author.
- Read an anthology/essay collection
- Read a book with a disabled MC
- Including invisible disabilities such as mental illness, learning disabilities, etc.
- Read a book with a girl squad
- Read a body positive book
- Read a book with a woman of color MC
- Read a classic written by/about a woman
- The definition of “classic” can be your determination
- Read a biography or memoir of a woman
- Read a book with a trans spec MC
- Including nonbinary, genderqueer, agender, etc.
- Read a book with a queer MC
- Including lesbian, bi, pan, aro/ace-spec, etc.
- Read a translated book
- Bonus if it’s also translated by a woman!
- Read a sci-fi or fantasy by/about a woman
- Read a book with a woman on the cover
- Read a middle grade book by/about a woman
- Read a book with no romantic subplot
- Read a graphic novel by/about a woman
- Read a book with multiple female POVs
Feel free to use the same book for multiple categories, and let me know if you want book recommendations for any of these! 💃
Blogging section
On each Monday of March, there is a post prompt for you to take part in if you so desire. All of these are to get you thinking and talking about books by and about women! The prompts are as follows:
March 4th: female characters that inspire you
March 11th: books with women on the cover
March 18th: female authors
March 25th: #ownvoices books about diverse women
If you’re joining in with any part of the challenge, make sure to use #WHMReadingChallenge. I’m sure I’ll be posting frequently about it, so go ahead and follow me on Twitter as well!
In the meantime, good luck compiling your lists of amazing books written by women, and I’ll see you all in March!

Omigosh, this is so much fun, Margaret! Sha and I have been looking for readathons and have pledged to do more this year, so we totally have to look into doing this one. This is fantastic! Your prompts are a lot of fun and such a fun way to celebrate all the epic women authors out there. I definitely have to check out what books I had planned for the month, and see what I can do. Thank you for tagging us, and we’ll be considering joining in!! 😀 Fantastic post, Margaret! 🙂 ❤

AHHH! I love this, so damn excited to participate.
I mostly read books by women only so that probably won’t be a problem (not that that is a good habit) but well, 12 books might be a problem…
Well, at least I’ll be able to keep up with the blogging part of it!!!
🙂
Can’t wait for this!!!

I panicked for a second and thought this took place in February, but it’s alright now 😂 Thank you for tagging me, I’m definitely always up for a bingo board/Readathon!! I also really like the female characters that inspire me prompt 😍

This sounds like such a great challenge, thank you for hosting this and thank you for tagging me and thinking of me! I’m not much of a challenge / readathon kind of person, so I’m not making any promises about participating but I’ll make sure to share the challenge and spread the word a little bit, too!! ❤ Best of luck for it all, I hope it will be a success! 😀

Thank you! ❤ No pressure to join in, I definitely understand not being a readathon person 😊 But I would definitely appreciate any spreading of the word! 😀

Great post, this looks like such a great challenge, not sure how well I’ll go on the reading as sadly I don’t have much time for reading at the moment 🙁 but I’ll definitely try and do a couple of the prompts as blog posts. Thank you so much for tagging me 😀💜💜

Hey Margaret!
This sounds like a fun reading challenge, and thank you for the tag! I am not super good with reading challenges, being a mood reader and all, but I’ll see how well I do with this one 🙂

This is a brilliant reading challenge, Margaret! I didn’t even know it was Women’s History Month, which made me super super happy to know I’ll get to read all these amazing posts throughout March 🙂
I recently reviewed the new Captain Marvel novel, the ultimate girl power book, so if you’d like to check it out it’s the latest post on my blog (I was already preparing for this challenge and I had no idea! xD) I posted it in April but still counts right?
I love your prompts so even though I’m a bit late in the game, I’ll try and squeeze the last two ones somewhere… Hopefully! And then see if I also get to tick anything off the bingo board.
Thanks for creating this ❤
