When I add a book to my TBR, I obviously want to love it, even though I know that it’s not realistic for me to rate every book I read 5 stars. Still, by this point I know my reading taste pretty, and I think I have a pretty good sense of which books I’ll love. Today, I’ll be talking about five books that I predict I will rate 5 stars when I read them!
These predictions are based on these books’ summaries, reviews, and the opinions of other readers whose tastes usually match up with mine. Obviously, these are all books that I’m excited to read, and hopefully this will give me an extra push to get to them soon! I’m also hoping to do a follow-up post once I’ve read all of them to see how well I was able to predict.
Now let’s get into my predictions!
My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows
Here are some things that I love: historical fiction + reimagining historical events + adding magic to history + ridiculousness. As far as I can tell, this book manages to combine all of these factors.
This book tells the story of Lady Jane Grey, who was the queen of England for, like, a week apparently back in the 1500s (yes, I just Wikipedia’d this). I tend to enjoy historical fiction that has a touch of silliness (see: The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue), which seems to be the vibe from this book. I think it’s going to be right up my alley!
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
Not only has this book been on my TBR for ages and people have told me to read it more times than I can count, but I really think I’ll love it! This sci-fi book follows a crew of space explorers, and from what I can tell it’s got group shenanigans and found family feels out the wazoo. Checking all of my boxes, huh? I mean, the Goodreads synopsis has this sentence: “Rosemary’s got to learn how to rely on this assortment of oddballs—an experience that teaches her about love and trust, and that having a family isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the universe.” YES PLEASE. My one concern is that I’ll find it slow, but usually I’m fine with that if I’m attached to the characters!
The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell
I’m so predictable. You give me a book with urban science fantasy, a female thief main character, historical settings, and a cast of diverse side characters, and I’m sold.
As far as I can tell, this book follows a thief who has to travel back in time and steal an artifact to save Magicians in the present day. I haven’t read a ton of time travel books that I’ve loved, but I’m ready to love this one! Plus, I’ve heard enough praise from reviewers that I trust that I’m dying to find out what all the hype is about.
Ivy Aberdeen’s Letter to the World by Ashley Herring Blake
What? A middle grade, you ask?? Okay, maybe it’s not that rare for me to read middle grade, but it is pretty rare for me to give it five stars. Still, I really think this is one that I’ll love! It follows twelve-year-old Ivy, who lost her notebook in a tornado and is afraid that someone will find it and see all her drawings of girls holding hands. This is a book that I’ve heard people say you should read regardless of your age – it sounds really sweet and heartfelt. More than anything, I’m really hoping that I love this as much as everyone else seems to!
The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black
Believe it or not, I’ve never read a Holly Black book, so I have no idea if I actually like her writing! I also haven’t read many fae books so who knows if I even like them. BUT I feel like if I do like either, I’ll love this book.
Like almost all of Holly Black’s books, this one is about humans and faeries. A brother and sister live in a town where the two live side by side supposedly peacefully, but is all as it seems?? (I’m not sure – I guess I’ll have to read to find out.) Everything I hear about this book makes me even more excited to read it!
Have you read any of these books? Do you think I’ll like them? What books on your TBR do you think you’ll rate 5 stars?

Lily Aberdeen sounds so relatable. I remember being protective of my writing notebooks when I was a kid.

I had no idea what My Lady Jane was about until, like, eight months ago! I just saw the cover and went “meh.” But then I read the blurbs and the reviews, and it went straight into my TBR. 😀 It sounds like such a fun time!
I hope all of these work out for you! ❤

The Last Magician was an instant 5-star read for me. I decided that pretty shortly into the book, and stuck with that feeling the whole way through. I immediately bought the sequel upon finishing, and am trying to convince myself not to preorder the third book before I finish the second, so I hope you enjoy it, as well!

Lovely post! ❤ I've only read the Folk of the Air books by Holly Black, but I did love her writing in that one! I'm a little bit scared about visiting The Darkest Part of the Forest, since it is an older work of hers, but I'm excited nonetheless! Happy reading!
